“As the twig is bent so grows the tree.”
Adults see chiropractors, why not children and babies? They are the same, yet different. Children and babies do need to see chiropractors for some of the same reasons adults do but also for different reasons.
We are the same in that our bodies are built to move and any restriction in the normal movement of joints, particularly the spinal and cranial joints can result in irritation to the nervous system.
The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, and eliminative systems to name a few. Health may be impaired by nerve interference. Many of the problems that plague infants and children stem from these spinal and cranial irritations.
We are different because children and babies are younger and immature; not full grown and developed. That makes it more important those restrictions be fixed, and not allowed to continue putting abnormal stress on the growing bones, ligaments, muscles and nerves.
Another way in which children and adults are different is in the way Dr. Maclean adjusts them. The techniques used to adjust them are often very different than what adults are used too.
As children are still growing and developing, their bodies are different. Their joints are not fully shaped, the ligaments are stretchier, and the muscles are looser and not as tense. Their problems are typical not as long-standing as in adults. Most importantly, infants and children love to be adjusted. It doesn’t hurt and they feel better after. They make that connection and love to be adjusted.
Another bonus is that infants and children typically hold their adjustments for longer periods of time and their corrective treatment plans are almost always significantly shorter than the average adult.
Bones grow in response to the stress put on them. They will change and grow differently as a result of the abnormal pressures. The saying goes “as the twig is bent so grows the tree”. Problems not addressed in childhood can and do affect them when they become adults.
“With an adult, chiropractic can affect their function but with a child, chiropractic can affect their function and their structure”
But the effect is again so much more to a child. By taking away abnormal stress we can improve the way the bones grow; straight and strong or crooked and bent. With an adult, chiropractic can affect their function but with a child, chiropractic can affect their function and their structure.
It is important to understand chiropractic is not a treatment for disease. The purpose is to restore the body’s normal functions and reduce the stress on the nervous system so the body can heal itself and function better.
